Stroke, Hypotension and Cardiac Surgery

In patients undergoing cardiac surgery on bypass, a retrospective analysis of stroke and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) during cardiopulmonary bypass linked ischemic stroke risk to MAP below 65 mm Hg. This figure consistently correlates with cardiac outcome also in anesthesia and in ICU.

The authors state: “Other factors that were independently associated with stroke were older age, hypertension, combined coronary artery bypass graft/valve surgery, emergent operative status, prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass duration, and postoperative new-onset atrial fibrillation”.
